System of control and assessment of students' knowledge in higher education institutions

Student Assessment

In higher educational institutions, the control of students' knowledge is carried out through intermediate and final control.

Criteria for assessing students' knowledge

Students' knowledge is based on the following criteria:

  • The student makes independent conclusions and decisions, can think creatively, reason independently, can apply the acquired knowledge in practice, understands, knows, can express, explain the essence of the subject (topic), and has an idea of the subject (topic) - 5 (excellent) grades;
  • The student conducts independent reasoning, is able to apply the acquired knowledge in practice, understands, knows, can express, explain the essence of the subject (topic), and has an idea of the subject (topic) - 4 (good) grades;
  • 3 (satisfactory) - if the student is able to apply the acquired knowledge in practice, understands, knows, can express, explain the essence of the subject (topic), and has an idea of the subject (topic);
  • if the student is found to have not mastered the course program, does not understand the essence of the subject (topic), and does not have an idea of the subject (topic) - 2 (unsatisfactory).

Student assessment is carried out on a 5-point scale.

If a student fails to take the interim and (or) final assessment for valid reasons, this student is permitted to retake the relevant assessment based on the decree of the faculty dean.

Intermediate control

Interim assessment is conducted during the semester after the completion of the corresponding section of the working subject program during classes to assess the student's knowledge and practical skills.

The type of midterm assessment can be conducted up to 2 times for each subject, depending on the specifics of the subject.

During the semester, midterm assessments are not conducted in subjects with a duration of less than 2 academic hours per week (4 academic hours in medical universities).

When assessing a student based on the type of interim assessment, their grades received during training sessions are taken into account.

Assessment of student knowledge in the type of interim control is carried out by the professor-teacher who conducted the training sessions.

At the end of the relevant academic year, a student who receives a grade of "3" (satisfactory) or "4" (good) or "5" (excellent) in the subjects will be transferred to the next year.

Final control

Students must have passed the midterm assessment before the deadline for the final assessment in the relevant subject.

A student who has not passed the type of intermediate control, as well as who has received a grade of "2" (unsatisfactory) for this type of control, is not included in the final control.

Conducting the final control and assessing the student's knowledge in this type of control is carried out by the professor-teacher who did not conduct classes.

A professor-teacher who conducted classes in the relevant subject is prohibited from participating in the final control.

A student who did not participate in or was not included in the final assessment, as well as a student who received an "2" (unsatisfactory) grade for this type of assessment, is considered an academic debtor.

It is not allowed to conduct more than one type of final control in one subject per day. The types of final control should be scheduled at least within 2 days.

Deadlines for submitting academic debts Students who are not graduating students with academic debts in up to 3 subjects are given a one-month period.

In this case, based on the results of the spring semester, the student with academic debt takes the types of intermediate and (or) final control in the relevant subject (s) at the beginning of the new academic year.

Graduate students are allowed to retake a subject (s) they did not master based on the results of the spring semester before the start of the final state attestation.

The number of retakes by a student of the type of interim and (or) final control during the period provided for the retake should not exceed 2 times.

The second assessment of a student for the type of interim and (or) final control is carried out by a special commission.

A student who fails to submit the existing debt within the specified period will be expelled from the course.

Students with academic debts of 4 or more subjects are not allowed to retake the exam, and they are excluded from the course.

A student retained in the course will continue their studies on a paid-contract basis from the beginning of the semester when they did not master the subject.

Review of evaluation results

Students who disagree with the assessment results have the right to appeal to the Appeals Committee, which is formed by the Dean of the Faculty.

The Appeals Committee shall include a chairperson and at least four members from among the relevant faculty who did not participate in the student assessment.

If a student disagrees with the assessment result, they can file an appeal within 24 hours of the announcement of the assessment result. An appeal filed by a student must be reviewed by the Appeals Commission within 2 days.

The student has the right to participate in the consideration of the student's appeal.

The Appeals Commission reviews the student's appeal and makes a decision based on its results. The decision indicates whether the student has mastered or failed to master the relevant subject.
