Representatives of "TIIAME" National Research University participated in Erasmus+ MECAS International Training in Portugal

On September 7, 2026 the Second Technical Training and Project Meeting of the international MECAS project - “Development of Master Curricula in EcoInformatics for the Impact on the Aral Sea Basin” - launched in Covilhã, Portugal, within the framework of the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) program.

Representatives of the Department of Hydraulics and Hydroinformatics of the “Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers” National Research University are participating in the international training. They include Doctor of Technical Sciences Luqmon Samiev, PhD Khumora Jalilova, Sirojiddin Jalilov and Feruza Rakhmanova.

The training, which will run from September 7 to 9,2026 is being held at the UBImedical Center of the University of Beira Interior (UBI). Representatives of partner higher education institutions and organizations from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Italy, and Spain are taking part in the event.

The training sessions are being conducted in both offline and online formats and include presentations, theoretical and practical sessions, and question-and-answer discussions on the educational modules being developed for the Master’s program in Ecoinformatics.

The First Day of the Training

On September 7, 2026 the training began with opening and introductory presentations delivered by representatives of the MECAS project coordinator, the University of Beira Interior, and UBImedical.

The program of the first day focused on the following modules:

  • Numerical Ecology

  • Citizen Science Green Application

  • Using GIS in Aquatic Ecomonitoring

  • R Programming in Ecology

As part of these modules, specialists delivered presentations and discussed modern methodological approaches, theoretical knowledge, and practical experience related to the respective fields.

One of the main objectives of the MECAS project is to develop and implement a new Master’s program in Ecoinformatics aimed at studying the environmental challenges of the Aral Sea Basin through the application of modern digital technologies.

Within the framework of the project, 17 new courses are planned to be developed for a two-year Master’s program in Ecoinformatics comprising 120 ECTS credits. During the technical training in Portugal, specialized sessions will be conducted on 10 of these courses.

During the following days of the training, sessions will continue on the following modules:

  • Terrestrial and Air-borne Remote Sensing and Spectrometry

  • Advanced GIS Spatial Analysis

  • Ecosystem Assessment and Management

  • Physical and Chemical Monitoring of the Environment

  • Geoinformation Systems in Ecology

  • Introductory Course to Google Earth Engine

The participation of specialists from “TIIAME” National Research University in this international training will contribute to acquiring modern knowledge and experience in the field of Ecoinformatics, improving newly developed educational programs, and further strengthening scientific and educational cooperation between higher education institutions in Europe and Central Asia.
