03.02.2023

On February 2, 2023, "TIIAME" National Research University together with the Department of Ecology and Water Resources Management and the Tashkent City Council of the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan, the Senate Committee on the Development of the Aral Sea Region and Ecology held a round table in connection with "World Wetlands Day". The topic of the event was "Issues of protection of wetlands in Uzbekistan”.
According to the decree of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated August 30, 2001, the Republic of Uzbekistan acceded to the Ramsar Convention, and this decree entered into force in February 2002. The wetlands of Uzbekistan are represented by more than 500 reservoirs with a total area of about one million hectares. These territories are vitally important for the waterfowl and shorebirds inhabiting them, including rare and endangered ones. The list of Ramsar sites located in the territory of Uzbekistan includes Dengizkul Lake and the Aydar-Arnasai system of lakes. Wetlands serve as a convenient habitat for many species of birds migrating through our country. That is why it is important to protect such territories and maintain the stability of their natural and climatic conditions. Wetlands are home to about 40 species of animals listed in the "Red Book" of the Republic of Uzbekistan, including birds and fish.
