Staying calm during earthquake — the greatest safety measure
08.10.2025

Recently, strong earthquake tremors felt across Uzbekistan caused a certain degree of anxiety and fear not only among local students but also among international ones. In particular, students from Turkmenistan, where such natural phenomena are rare, were not very familiar with the nature of earthquakes.
Therefore, on October 8, 2025 a seminar-training titled “Staying calm during an earthquake — the greatest safety measure!” was held at "Land Resources and Cadastre" Faculty of the "Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers" National Research University, specifically for Turkmen students. The goal was to help them restore psychological calm, develop correct response skills, and strengthen a culture of safety.
At the beginning of the event, specialists explained in simple and clear terms what an earthquake is, its causes, and key concepts such as epicenter and magnitude. Students learned the importance of remaining calm during an earthquake, avoiding panic, and helping others.
During the practical session, special attention was given to the following key points:
-
Choosing safe places during an earthquake (under a table, in a doorway, or by an inner wall corner);
-
Turning off electrical appliances and gas sources;
-
Avoiding the use of elevators and maintaining order and unity during evacuation;
-
Moving to open areas, keeping a safe distance from buildings, trees, and power lines;
-
Waiting for official announcements after the tremor and not re-entering buildings without permission.
As part of the training, students also took part in an evacuation drill. When the signal was given, they practiced exiting the building through designated routes and gathering safely in open areas.
The main purpose of this event was to teach students how to behave during emergencies, guide them from panic toward calmness, and equip them with practical safety skills.
At the end of the seminar, specialists held a psychological counseling session to help reduce fear, strengthen mutual support, and foster a spirit of cooperation among students.
The seminar not only enhanced safety awareness, but also helped cultivate a sense of calmness, confidence, and alertness among participants. Students expressed satisfaction, noting that such practical training greatly improved their preparedness for real-life situations.
